Shrewsbury Market Hall is proud to have been a runner-up in the national competition for ‘Britain’s Favourite Market 2022’.
Shrewsbury’s popular indoor market, which was crowned ‘Britain’s Favourite Market 2018’, made it into the top three markets shortlisted as finalists for the 2022 award, alongside Swansea and Bury markets.
Congratulations to Bury, which took the title this year as part of the Great British Market Awards. The awards ceremony was held at the National Association of British Market Authorities annual conference, in Birmingham, on February 3.
‘Britain’s Favourite Market’ is the most hotly anticipated award in the market awards line-up. It attracts tens of thousands of public votes, and the winner is chosen from a shortlist of 10, which are then visited by mystery shoppers. Finalists are selected by a panel of industry experts.
Kate Gittins, Site Faciilties Manager for Shrewsbury Market Hall, said the market had a “vibrant vibe that people loved”.
“I just provide a safe building, everyone else does the rest – the stallholders provide the vibrant mix that our customers love and we have a fantastic team supporting them,” she said.
“We also have a wonderful loyal following of customers. We want to thank them for voting in their droves and helping us get into the runner-up spot.”
Kate said Shrewsbury Market Hall was known for its dynamic mix of market stalls and eateries. “It’s an all-round destination.”
The market had come through the pandemic stronger than ever, she added.
“Trading carried on and our stallholders served our customers, whether face-to-face for essential goods and/or deliveries and online. They were able to flip their businesses around to continue.”
“I truly believe that the market and the stallholders have come through this stronger than ever. They have re-configured their businesses and are thriving.”
The market hall also won awards for ‘Best Midlands Market’ in 2019 and 2020.
Shrewsbury Market Hall is jointly managed by Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council. Shropshire Council owns and maintains the building and manages the permanent stalls. Shrewsbury Town Council manages the canopied section of the market.
